How
the Kiwi Anchor Rider
works
The
Kiwi Anchor Rider is a concentrated, heavy weight
that is simply twisted on after you
have anchored securely, to change the angle of
pull on the anchor, to help it dig in.
It almost DOUBLES the holding
power and reduces
the anchor's working load by
50%. The forces on the boat
have to overcome and lift the weight, before
exerting any pressure on the anchor.
It is much more effective than letting out
even more rope or chain when it blows.
"When scuba diving in foul ground
we
let a generous amount of chain out,
deploy our Kiwi Anchor Rider and dive down the
anchor chain to check the holding power. Our
observation in a variety of sea conditions is we have observed NO WEIGHT
AT ALL PULLING ON OUR DELTA ANCHOR. With
the motion of the boat having to contend
with the anchor weight and chain, we have
never witnessed our Delta anchor working"

The Kiwi
Anchor Rider also
Increases
the catenary. The Kiwi Anchor Rider changes the angle
of pull on the anchor to horizontal, this keeps
more chain and the anchor shank on the seabed and helps the anchor dig
in. Read what the Royal Navy says about why anchors
drag
and how important it is to keep the shank of the
anchor on the seabed.
If you have an all chain anchoring system read here why using an anchor weight is
even more effective than letting out more chain
when it starts to blow.
Reduces the
swing and the chance of the anchor rolling
out and possibly dragging. Reduced swing is
also especially beneficial in
crowded bays and for high winded vessels that
tend to 'sail around' at anchor. The
Kiwi Anchor Rider creates incredible drag
resistance by holding
the chain into the mud or sand bottom. The pivot point
is from where the anchor weight is hanging, rather
than from the anchor.
'it reduces the
swing by about 50% on a 75 ton, 50ft, steel Cape Horn
trawler'
says Ben Hines
Reduces
the boat’s overall motion. It acts as a spring or shock
absorber to dampen all
sudden actions on the boat that are normally transmitted
to the anchor. It especially dampens the fore-aft see-saw
motion sometimes felt in surge. These actions lift the
chain and the shank of the anchor and are
the main reasons an anchor drags. Life on board is much more
comfortable and the anchor is less likely to be
pulled out.
Stops
snubbing each side of the swing
in wind gusts, when the bow lifts
to the sea and the chain is
pulled taut with a jerk. This
adds to your cruising comfort and also reduces
the risk of the anchor being dislodged.
In extreme weather, a 'snubber', which reduces the
noise the chain makes over the bow roller being
transmitted to the boat, can be put on after
setting your Kiwi Anchor Rider.
Keeps
the
rope or chain warp almost
vertical and out of the way of
other boats moving about in the
bay, especially at night.
Turn your fishing rod
and reel around and hold it by the tip end and you will
feel the effects of leverage. This
is why an anchor weight is so effective.
On the recommended
anchoring scope of 5:1, it takes an amazing
horizontal force of 147lb to lift a 30lb
(13.6kg) weight off the seabed.
If
you don't use an anchor weight...
You can set two
anchors and hope the wind does not change
direction
or lower your dive belt, a home-made
lead weight, bucket of rocks or a heap of
chain in a sack -
the principle is exactly the same. These
all keep maximum chain on the seabed and alter the pull
on the anchor. But
- do you
really want to be in the dinghy
or on the bow using spanners and
shackles when it is blowing a
gale and the boat is pitching and
rolling?
- should you
really risk using your second
anchor in case of further
difficulties?
These purpose designed
weights can be simply twisted
on or off in less than a minute-
no tools are required. Speed is really
important if you are not confident your anchor will hold
in windy conditions.
